The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas in English was launched by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong on 26 October 1998.

An international conference entitled, A Genealogies and Chinese Overseas Studies held on 19 August 2000.

The Chinese Overseas Online Databank project called “HuayiNet”was launched in February 2000 by the Minister for Information and the Arts, BG George Yeo. HuayiNet is an online website of 13 Singapore-based organisations which collectively form an Inter-Agency Committee on Chinese Overseas Databank and Research Collection. HuayiNet serves as an online resource on ethnic Chinese materials and which are made available to scholars, researchers and the public.

An international conference that was wholly sponsored by the Chinese dialects community organizations in Singapore was organized. Called the Chinese Community Organisations and Globalisations : Comparative International Perspectives, the conference was organised in association with the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations and the Tan Kah Kee International Society with support from the Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies in Kuala Lumpur and the Kaisa Heritage Centre in the Philippines.

The French edition of The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas was launched in Paris on Chinese New Year’s day in January.
2002
The year saw the publication of two titles – Genealogies and Chinese Overseas Migration and Chinese Newspapers in Southeast Asia. The first publication comprised the proceedings of the conference on genealogies held in 2000, and the second contained the findings of a research project undertaken by the Centre.

The domain name www.ChineseHeritageCentre.org was registered.

Close collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) to make the Centre’s library collection searchable on the NTU Online Public Access Cataloguing system or OPAC.

Two issues of the Centre’s Bulletin were published in March and September containing articles and research notes by local and overseas scholars as well as events and activities organised by the Chinese overseas communities world-wide. The bulletin is available and can be downloaded from the website.

The Centre’s library was named the Wang Gungwu Library in recognition of Professor Wang’s significant contribution to the field of Chinese Overseas Studies.

Exhibition on Grooming Future Generations Through Education : Chinese School Textbooks In Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia Before 1965 was mounted in the foyer of the Centre.

The public lecture series co-organised with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore (NUS) entitled, Contemporary Culture and Chinese Heritage in a Globalizing World was launched.

In this series, there were four lectures held in 2003 and 2004:

First lecture : Cultures Today and the Chinese Heritage by Professor Wang Gungwu

Second lecture : In Search of Inspiration from Traditional Chinese Architecture by Mr Liu Thai Ker

Third lecture : Negotiating Cultural Change and Intergenerational Relations : The Educational Experience of Immigrant Chinese Children and “Chinese Parachute Kids” in the United States by Professor Zhou Min.

Fourth lecture : Contemporary Culture and Chinese Heritage in a Globalizing World by Professor Wee Chow Hou.

First volume in the monograph series was published and is entitled, The Boat and the City, Chinese Diasporas and the Architecture of Southeast Asian Costal Cities by Dr Johannes Widodo.

An international conference entitled, Asian Diasporas : Revisiting the Chinese and South Asian Experiences was jointly organised with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore (NUS) from 5 to 7 April.

An internationally-refereed journal, Journal of Chinese Overseas will be launched in May 2005. The journal will further enhance the Centre’s role as an international leader in the understanding of the diverse Chinese overseas communities. The publication of this journal is made possible through a generous donation from the Lee Foundation (States of Malaya).

Publication of a new series for the Hok Tek Chi Loke Yah Teng Association Singapore, a clan association founded in 1824. Documents from the five volumes of old records form the basis for this new series. The earliest of these documents date back to the late 19th century. The first two volumes in the series appeared in April 2005 entitled A History of the Hok Tek Chi Loke Yah Teng Association, 1824-2004 and Loke Yah Teng Archival Collection Vol. 1: Minutes of Meetings, 1920-1927. The Association was the sponsor of the publication of these two volumes.

A new exhibition entitled, Chinese More Or Less: An exhibition on Overseas Chinese Identity, was unveiled by Mr George Yeo, Minister for Foreign Affairs, on 22 July.

Co-organised The Third International Conference of Institutes and Libraries for Chinese Overseas Studies on “Maritime Asia and the Chinese Overseas”, as a member of HuayiNet.

Publication of the third and fourth volume of the Hok Tek Chi Loke Yah Teng series entitled Hok Tek Chi Loke Yah Teng Archival Collection 2: Part one: Minutes of Meeting, 1953-1959; Part two: The Resolution Book of the Committee for the Relocation of the Loke Yah Teng Burial Ground, 1957-1959 and H ok Tek Chi Loke Yah Teng Archival Collection 3: Accounts Book, 1887-1933 in December . The two volumes were sponsored by the Hok Tek Chi Loke Yah Teng Association and National Library Board respectively.

Publication of Dutch Colonial Education: The Chinese Experience in Indonesia , 1900-1942 in December 2005. The book describes “the controversial, small but relatively important Chinese community from the viewpoint of its experience with education during the last decades of Dutch rule in the East Indies ”. Both hardcover and paperback copies of the book are available.

Co-organised the bilingual international Seminar, Tongmenghui, Sun Yat Sen and the Chinese in Southeast Asia : A Revisit with Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall on 12 June 2006 . Leading experts on Tongmenghui and Sun Yat Sen from Mainland China , Taiwan and the Southeast Asian region were invited. The Seminar was graced by Guest-of-Honour Dr Lien Chan, Kuomintang Honorary Chairman.
